Jeju Police Agency to Conduct 'Special Crackdown on Drunk Driving' Starting from the 15th
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Police Agency (Chief Kang Hwangsoo) announced on the 13th that it will conduct a "special crackdown on drunk driving" from the 15th of this month to the 31st of next month to ensure the safety of residents and tourists from traffic accidents during the vacation season.
This special crackdown was initiated in anticipation of a significant increase in tourists and the relaxation of COVID-19 social distancing measures compared to other regions ahead of the peak summer vacation season.
To prevent the spread of drunk driving taking advantage of the vacation atmosphere, the Jeju Autonomous Police Unit will jointly carry out the special crackdown on drunk driving.
Analysis of traffic accidents caused by drunk driving over the past five years by Jeju Police showed that the frequency of drunk driving traffic accidents was highest in this month and steadily increased until October.
Also, at the beginning of last year, as COVID-19 emerged and drunk driving crackdowns became lax, accidents caused by drunk driving increased significantly.
From January to last month, Jeju Police conducted continuous crackdowns day and night, including special crackdowns, resulting in 686 drunk driving crackdowns, an increase of 116 cases (20.4%) compared to 570 cases during the same period last year.
Drunk driving traffic accidents were 147 cases, a decrease of 45 cases (23.4%) compared to 192 cases during the same period last year.
This special crackdown will be conducted unpredictably using a "spot mobile" method, selecting multiple locations such as beaches and tourist spots, entertainment and dining districts, and main roads, moving the crackdown locations every 30 minutes to 1 hour.
During the period, more than twice a week, joint surprise crackdowns will be conducted across the entire province in cooperation with the Jeju Autonomous Police Unit and others.
While paying attention to preventing COVID-19 infection by using non-contact breathalyzers, drunk driving crackdowns will also be carried out.
Chief Kang Hwangsoo said, "Drunk driving is an unforgivable serious crime that takes away the precious lives and property of others. We will correct the wrong perception that drunk driving crackdowns are not conducted due to COVID-19 and focus our efforts on eradicating drunk driving."
He added, "Please recognize that drunk driving will definitely be cracked down on, and even if you drink just one glass of alcohol, never get behind the wheel."
