Yeosu Airport, Approaching 1 Million Passengers Since Opening?
As of June, Passenger Traffic Increased by 147% Compared to Last Year, Summer Vacation Passenger Growth Expected to Accelerate
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shim Kyung-taek] Despite the impact of COVID-19, the number of passengers at Yeosu Airport in Jeollanam-do continues to increase, raising the possibility of reaching 1 million annual passengers for the first time since its opening in 1972.
According to Yeosu Airport, 635,000 passengers used the airport in 2019 before the pandemic, 657,000 in 2020, and as of June 24 this year, the number has already exceeded 500,000, an increase of 297,000 passengers (147%) compared to the same period last year (January 1 to June 23).
Yeosu Airport has driven domestic flight demand by inducing new low-cost carriers to start operations and supporting their settlement, in connection with the rising preference for domestic travel as an alternative to overseas travel.
Due to the sudden increase in demand, problems such as lack of parking spaces, illegal parking, and insufficient public transportation have arisen, and various measures are being considered to resolve these issues.

An airport official stated, “We are expanding parking spaces and facilities to support transportation-vulnerable groups for safe and convenient airport use, conducting thorough disinfection, and holding cultural events. We will continue efforts to maintain low-cost carriers’ operations even when overseas travel routes open with the introduction of the travel bubble.”
