Nearly 100 Million Chinese Communist Party Members... White-Collar Workers Outnumber Laborers
6.7% of the Total Population... Increased by 3.23 Million Compared to 2019
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] The number of members of the Chinese Communist Party, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, is approaching 100 million.
On the 30th, Xinhua News Agency cited the latest statistics from the Organization Department of the Chinese Communist Party, reporting that as of the 6th, the total number of party members was 95,148,000, an increase of 3,234,000 (3.5%) compared to the end of 2019.
This accounts for 6.7% of China's population of over 1.41 billion.
The party's subordinate organizations extend to every corner, including villages and enterprises, totaling 4,864,000, which is a 3.9% increase from 2019.
By occupation, workers and farmers number 32,298,000 (33.9%), which is less than those classified as white-collar workers such as managers and government employees (33,460,000; 35.2%). The gap between these two groups has widened compared to 2019.
Other categories include students (3,067,000), other occupations (7,205,000), and retirees (19,118,000).
The Communist Party, which once proclaimed itself as a party of workers and farmers, has seen significant changes in its membership composition as it actively embraces capitalists.
By gender, women account for 27,450,000, representing 28.8%.
Ethnic minorities make up 7.5%, and those with college degrees or higher constitute 52.0%.
By age, those in their 30s are the largest group with 20,516,000 members. Members aged 30 or younger number 12,553,000, while those aged 61 and above total 26,930,000.
By time of joining, more than half of the members joined during the reform and opening-up period. From the 3rd Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee in 1978, when the reform and opening-up policy was adopted, until the 18th Party Congress when President Xi Jinping took power, 60,943,000 people joined the party.
Since Xi Jinping's administration, 19,516,000 have joined, and 6,481,000 joined before the founding of the People's Republic of China (1949).
