Opposition Presidential Race Clock Ticks... Opposition Candidates Accelerate Their Steps
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The opposition's movement to select a presidential candidate is also accelerating. The People Power Party, which selects its candidate about two months later than the Democratic Party of Korea, still has the atmosphere of 'there is enough time,' but unlike the Democratic Party, it is greatly influenced by the actions of 'outsiders,' making the 'strategic battle' among candidates even fiercer.
Within the People Power Party, former Incheon Mayor Ahn Sang-soo is set to announce his presidential candidacy on the 1st of next month. Prior to this, Rep. Ha Tae-kyung of the People Power Party was the first party member to declare a presidential bid. Former Future United Party (the predecessor of the People Power Party) leader Hwang Kyo-ahn is also continuing his presidential campaign by holding a book launch event. In addition, Rep. Hong Joon-pyo, former Rep. Yoo Seung-min, and Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong have clearly expressed their intention to run for president and are only left with the formal announcement.
According to the People Power Party's constitution and regulations, the presidential candidate must be selected by November 9, which is 120 days before the election day. While there may be adjustments such as advancing or postponing the primary schedule, Party Leader Lee Jun-seok is emphasizing a timely start with the 'bus theory.' Since the timing of the primary is a matter that benefits or disadvantages candidates differently, it is generally expected that changing the schedule will not be easy. Furthermore, according to the party's constitution and regulations, presidential candidates from outside the party must qualify as responsible party members. To become a responsible party member, one must pay party dues for at least three months, so outsiders must complete their party membership by early August.

Additionally, Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People Party, which is in merger talks with the People Power Party, is also expected to run for president. Lee Tae-gyu, secretary-general of the People Party, appeared on TBS Radio's 'Kim Eo-jun's News Factory' and said, "Many within the party are directly or indirectly requesting a presidential run," adding, "He will clarify his position in July or August." If the merger proceeds smoothly, Ahn may also enter the People Power Party's presidential primary.
