President Jeon Gyeonghun: "Leading the 5G Network Market with Chip Design Experience and Software Capabilities"
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] “The ultimate goal is to enable everything and everyone in society to be connected and communicate with each other.”
At an event held online at 11 p.m. on the 22nd under the theme 'Samsung Networks: Redefined,' Jeon Kyung-hoon, President of Samsung Electronics’ Network Business Division, spoke about the vision for the 5G network business.
President Jeon said, “Samsung Electronics began proactive 5G research in 2009, even before 4G mobile communication was widely adopted, and has led the global 5G market by successfully commercializing 5G first in the world. Currently, we provide 5G commercial services to 162 telecom operators in 68 countries worldwide, connecting approximately 300 million people through 5G.”
He added, “In the rapidly growing global 5G market, we have already secured more business contracts than in the 4G era, supplying over 4 million 5G base stations.” Samsung Electronics is expanding its next-generation mobile communication business by consecutively signing 5G equipment supply contracts with leading operators such as Verizon, the No. 1 mobile carrier in the U.S. last year, and this year with Japan’s and Europe’s top operators, NTT Docomo and Vodafone.
President Jeon cited technological capability, especially competitiveness in chipsets and software, as the key factors enabling this growth. He explained, “We have been independently developing modem chips for over 20 years. Based on this chipset design and production capability, we have been supplying 5G products equipped with our self-developed System on Chip (SoC) since 2019.”
He also mentioned software, stating, “The Network Business Division places strong emphasis on virtualization technology. We are a provider that has commercialized virtualized RAN on a large scale, meeting the operation, performance, functionality, and reliability standards set by major U.S. telecom operators.”
He concluded, “Based on these capabilities, as we grow faster than ever in the 5G market, we will continue to lead the acceleration into a hyper-connected era that seamlessly connects all things and people through partnerships with leading companies and differentiated solutions.”
