Ministry of Justice, KIPO, and Universities Support Activation of Youth Startups

View original image[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The Ministry of Justice, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), and universities are joining forces to revitalize youth startups.
On the 17th, KIPO held the ‘Intellectual Property (IP) Startup Conference’ at the Government Complex Daejeon. The conference was organized to explore institutional support measures for revitalizing youth startups through collaboration between the Ministry of Justice, KIPO, and universities.
Attendees included Minister of Justice Park Beom-gye, KIPO Commissioner Kim Yong-rae, KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung, Chungnam National University President Lee Jin-sook, and Hannam University President Lee Kwang-seop, who also signed a ‘Business Agreement for the Revitalization of Youth Startups.’
The agreement primarily includes establishing a cooperative system between the Ministry of Justice and KIPO to efficiently prevent and resolve legal and patent disputes arising during the commercialization of intellectual property by youth startups.
Additionally, the Ministry of Justice, KIPO, KAIST, Chungnam National University, and Hannam University agreed to mutually cooperate in providing legal support for young entrepreneurs, supporting the commercialization of unused patents for technology startups, and offering expert assistance for startups’ overseas expansion.
At the conference, KIPO also conducted presentations and a special panel discussion on the theme of ‘Intellectual Property and Youth Entrepreneurship.’
Presenters included Choi Sung-yul, Director of the Technology Value Creation Center at KAIST; Jeong Jong-yul, Director of Research and Industry-Academic Cooperation at Chungnam National University; and Kim Woon-joong, Professor of Chemistry at Hannam University, who spoke on the ‘Necessity of Fostering Youth Startups Using Intellectual Property Rights.’ Following this, lawyer Kim Min-jin from the Ministry of Justice’s Legal Support Team and Han Jung-moo, Regional Intellectual Property Officer at the Korea Invention Promotion Association, presented on ‘Government Support Status and Cases for Fostering Youth Startups Based on Intellectual Property.’
In particular, the conference included a panel discussion on the theme ‘Revitalizing Youth Startups and Intellectual Property Entrepreneurship’ featuring Minister Park Beom-gye, Commissioner Kim Yong-rae, President Lee Kwang-hyung, President Lee Jin-sook, and President Lee Kwang-seop.
Minister Park Beom-gye stated, “To effectively respond to social structural changes caused by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the spread of COVID-19, it is necessary for the government and universities to cooperate and improve institutional measures that support youth entrepreneurship motivation and the industrialization of intellectual property. The Ministry of Justice will focus on improving legislation and legal administration to support youth technology startups.”
