[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s Mullae Art Factory announced on the 16th that it will carry out the '2021 Mullae Creative Village Support Project MEET,' selecting and supporting 27 outstanding art projects in Mullae Creative Village, a representative indigenous art village in Korea, from the 21st of this month until the end of December.
MEET is an art support project representing Mullae Creative Village, which began in 2010 and is now in its 12th year. MEET stands for the “Mullae Effect,” meaning the spreading power of Mullae-dong in the world, and also signifies “meet” through culture and arts in Mullae-dong. It has contributed to revitalizing the local cultural and artistic ecosystem by discovering and supporting innovative artists active in the Mullae-dong area.
Mullae Creative Village is an artist village centered around Mullae-dong, a district densely populated with ironworks, where artists from various genres have gathered. It was organically formed as artists gradually came together from the early 2000s. Currently, more than 100 cultural and artistic spaces, including studios for visual and performing artists, galleries, workshops, and performance venues, as well as around 300 artists, actively work there.
Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s Mullae Art Factory opened in 2010 to revitalize the artistic ecosystem of Mullae Creative Village and has been promoting various projects including MEET. To date, about 220 art projects have been carried out through MEET, involving approximately 1,800 artists and about 50,000 cumulative citizen participants.
'MEET 2021' will be conducted in two tracks: the ‘Creative Presentation Track (12 teams),’ which proceeds from project planning to presentation, and the ‘Creative Preparation Track (15 teams),’ which supports artists conducting research and studies to realize their projects. Projects include performances and exhibitions reflecting the characteristics of Mullae-dong, children’s plays addressing the increasingly important issue of climate and environmental problems, and algorithm-based visual coding competitions.
The ‘Creative Presentation Track’ consists of 12 teams and will begin on the 21st with the 'EX-UP Artist Support Program,' which provides creative spaces and artist consulting for emerging artists, followed by various projects each month. Visitors can experience diverse performances and exhibitions that capture the unique character of Mullae-dong.
From June to August, the ‘Creative Presentation Track’ will showcase three works: the EX-UP Artist Support Program, which attempts to transform creative shared spaces for emerging artists; the 'Mullae Live Festival,' featuring indie musicians from various genres such as hard rock, pop punk, and emo pop; and short film productions themed on youth loneliness and urban isolation.
The ‘Creative Preparation Track’ includes 15 selected teams who will conduct research and studies related to their work production from June to the end of November. Despite the difficult COVID-19 situation, selected artists will be supported with workshops and 2 million KRW per team to expand and develop their artistic perspectives through research and study for creation.
