78% of Art Community Say "National Museum of Modern Art Should Be Built Using Lee Kun-hee Collection"
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] A survey result has emerged in the art world indicating that it is desirable to utilize the 'Lee Kun-hee Collection' for the establishment of a National Museum of Modern Art.
'The Group of People Who Want a National Museum of Modern Art' announced on the 9th that it conducted a survey from the 5th to the 8th targeting 200 art experts regarding the utilization plan for the 'Lee Kun-hee Collection,' which produced this result. In the survey, 78.4% (116 respondents) answered that 'a National Museum of Modern Art should be established by combining the modern art collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Lee Kun-hee Collection.'
Following that, preferences were high for 'management and possession by the National Museum of Korea and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art' (14.9%, 22 respondents), and 'establishment of a Lee Kun-hee Exhibition Hall including all genres and periods' (11.5%, 17 respondents).
Regarding anticipated issues if a separate Lee Kun-hee Exhibition Hall is established, many opinions included 'contrary to the donor’s intention who donated to both the National Museum of Korea and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art,' 'difficulty in selecting the location for establishment,' and 'contrary to museology which requires classification by type and period.'
Regarding local governments’ competition to attract the Lee Kun-hee Art Museum, responses included 'the National Museum of Korea branch, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art branch, and local public art museums can collaborate to hold traveling exhibitions,' and 'showy claims by politicians conscious of next year’s local elections.'
The establishment of the National Museum of Modern Art itself was evaluated as necessary by an overwhelming majority. 89.1% (131 respondents) agreed, with 'very necessary' (76.9%) and 'necessary' (12.1%).
The survey included various art world figures such as art historians, curators, artists, critics, and gallerists.
