[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The grand festival 'Marine Week,' featuring exhibitions and various events in the domestic shipbuilding and marine industry sector, will take place in Busan.
This year, Marine Week will be held twice. The festival is divided into the International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX) and the International Port, Logistics, and Marine Environment Industry Exhibition (SEA-PORT) in the first half of the year, and the International Shipbuilding and Marine Industry Exhibition (KORMARINE) in the second half.
The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Hyung-joon) announced on the 4th that it will jointly host the '2021 Busan International Shipbuilding and Marine Festival (MARINE WEEK 2021)' with the Republic of Korea Navy and the Korea International Trade Association from June 9 to 12 for four days at BEXCO in Haeundae.
This is a prestigious exhibition event where one can see at a glance the status of Busan as a global center of the shipbuilding and marine industry and the latest developments in cutting-edge equipment and new technologies in the domestic and international marine and defense industries.
The Busan International Shipbuilding and Marine Festival (MARINE WEEK), held biennially in odd-numbered years since 2001, will be held in October this year to resolve issues such as schedule overlaps with related exhibitions and lack of rental space.
▲ The International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX) and ▲ the International Port, Logistics, and Marine Environment Industry Exhibition (SEA-PORT) will be held in June, while ▲ the International Shipbuilding and Marine Industry Exhibition (KORMARINE) will be held in October.
Although related exhibitions overseas have been canceled or postponed due to COVID-19, this year's event, marking its 11th edition, will host 120 companies from 7 countries with 450 booths.
Additionally, more than 80 naval commanders, senior officers, military attach?s in Korea, and defense experts from 28 countries overseas will visit Busan in large numbers.
Active military diplomacy among participating countries and practical business related to domestic export products are expected to take place.
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and Hyundai Heavy Industries, the leading domestic shipyards related to warship construction, will set up large exhibition halls to showcase the latest technologies for the Korean next-generation destroyer (KDDX) project.
Leading domestic defense companies such as LIG Nex1, Hanwha Group (Hanwha Systems, Hanwha Defense, Hanwha Aerospace), KAI, and Poongsan, as well as major overseas defense companies including Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, GE, Safran, Rolls-Royce, Babcock International, and UK Defence & Security Exports, will participate.
On June 11, a patriotic music concert will be held at the BEXCO Auditorium, and daily performances by the Navy honor guard and military band will take place at the BEXCO plaza.
For the first time this year, the Air Force will conduct a three-day support flight for Busan citizens overcoming COVID-19 and a celebratory flight for the opening ceremony from June 7 to June 9, providing various attractions.
Mayor Park Hyung-joon of Busan said, "Despite the recession in related industries due to COVID-19, the participation of many companies in the exhibition shows their will to overcome the downturn," and added, "Busan City will do its best to support companies so they can overcome the recession early."
