Revealed at the Industry-Academia-Research Meeting during Visit to Korea Aerospace Research Institute in Daejeon on the 31st
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] Lim Hye-sook, Minister of Science and ICT, announced on the 31st that she will further expand investment in space development as a follow-up measure to the recent Korea-US summit results.
Minister Lim made this announcement during a visit to the Korea Aerospace Research Institute in Daedeok Research Complex, Daejeon, in the afternoon, where she held a field meeting on space development research following the Korea-US summit with company executives and researchers.
Minister Lim said, "With the Korea-US summit and its follow-up measures, an opportunity has been created for our country to leap forward as a space-advanced nation. Taking the Artemis Agreement as a milestone, we will expand investments for challenging space exploration and strive to create an environment where companies can actively participate in space development through proactive institutional improvements."
Earlier, President Moon Jae-in visited the United States on the 21st and met with U.S. President Joe Biden, agreeing on the termination of missile guidelines, joining the Artemis Agreement, a U.S.-led lunar exploration project, and cooperation in establishing the Korean Positioning System (KPS).
The Korea-US missile guidelines, which have been in place for over 40 years, now allow the development of new high-performance launch vehicles for high-altitude satellite launches and deep space exploration. It is expected to contribute to the growth of the scale and capabilities of Korea's space industry through the establishment of space development infrastructure and expansion of demand.
The signing of the Artemis Agreement sets principles and codes of conduct that participating countries must follow during lunar and deep space exploration, enabling participation in various global space exploration programs. The development of KPS is also expected to gain momentum.
Minister Lim also held a meeting with executives of space companies and researchers from government-funded institutes to gather opinions on current issues. Participants urged, "With the termination of the Korea-US missile guidelines, it is necessary to consolidate national capabilities for space launch vehicle development," and "there is a need to participate more actively in international space exploration programs through the Artemis Agreement, and government-level investment should be expanded accordingly."
