New COVID-19 Cases at 480, Decrease Due to Weekend Effect (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] The number of new COVID-19 cases in South Korea has dropped to the 400s for the first time in 20 days. However, this is largely due to a decrease in testing over the weekend, making it difficult to conclude that the spread has truly slowed.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced on the 30th at midnight that there were 480 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to 139,910. This is 53 fewer than the previous day (533 cases), dropping below 500. The number of cases in the 400s was last seen 20 days ago on the 10th of this month (463 cases).
The decrease in new cases is interpreted as a result of fewer tests conducted over the weekend. Analysts say it is still difficult to view the number of confirmed cases as trending downward.
Over the past week, the daily average number of new cases was about 569, with the key indicator for adjusting the 'social distancing' level?the daily average of locally transmitted cases?at approximately 547, which remains within the Level 2.5 range (nationwide 400?500 or more cases).
Among the new cases reported that day, 464 were locally transmitted and 16 were imported.
The number of locally transmitted cases decreased by 41 compared to the previous day.
By region, the Seoul metropolitan area accounted for 333 cases (71.8%), with Seoul at 159, Gyeonggi at 156, and Incheon at 18. Non-metropolitan areas reported a total of 131 cases (28.2%), including Daegu with 20, Gangwon with 17, and Busan with 13.
Regarding cluster outbreaks, the number of confirmed cases linked to entertainment establishments in Daegu has risen to 225. In Gangwon, 33 and 48 cases have tested positive so far in the Chuncheon and Wonju areas, respectively, centered around entertainment venues.
