The water circulation city creation project is a key initiative promoted by the Ministry of Environment to manage non-point source pollutants, which are water pollutants discharged along with rainwater from impervious surfaces in urban areas. The city has been implementing the project since 2017 with a total budget of 15 billion KRW.
The pilot project, which installs Low Impact Development (LID) technique facilities, targets an area of 2.34㎢ covering Dongsang, Hoehyeon, and Buwon-dong. Construction began in August last year and is scheduled for completion in November. The major facility sites currently completed include Gimhae Donggwang Elementary School, Bunseong Square, Gimhae Library, and the Bicycle Training Center.
Within the project sites, LID facilities such as permeable pavement, plant cultivation pots, vegetative retention basins, and infiltration trenches have been installed to simultaneously reduce the volume of rainwater runoff and non-point source pollutants, thereby improving river water quality and enhancing the water circulation system.
