Creating Spaces in Schools Together with Gyeongnam Province, the Education Office, and Local Residents
Completion of 12 Schools under the 2020 Gyeongnam-type School Space Innovation Model Project
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Gyeongsangnam-do and the Gyeongsangnam-do Office of Education announced on the 27th that 12 elementary and middle schools selected for the 2020 Gyeongnam-type School Space Innovation Model Project have completed the project.
The Gyeongnam-type School Space Innovation Model Project is a unique initiative by Gyeongsangnam-do, where the provincial government and the Office of Education collaborate to transform unused spaces within schools into open spaces that can be jointly used by schools and local residents, thereby instilling the value of community.
Facilitators were assigned to each school to promote a user-participatory design approach that reflects the opinions of the village education community in the space design.
Unused spaces within schools, such as playgrounds, main entrances, or annex spaces, were utilized to create outdoor spaces, reading culture complex spaces, and common areas.
The outdoor spaces include forest playgrounds for kindergarten children as well as playgrounds with white play areas.
There are also examples of changes made to the most authoritative space in schools, the main entrance. In the case of Miryang Milju Elementary School, walls of the main building’s central entrance, conference room, and administrative office were removed to create a space where reading culture, meetings, and play coexist.
Parents and local residents can use these spaces for club activities, discussions, debates, and various other gatherings.

This year, as in the previous year, a total of 4 billion KRW is being supported for 14 elementary and middle schools in the province to promote space construction projects that reflect the conditions and demands of the local community and schools.
