Another Dog Bite Incident... 50-Year-Old Woman Dies After Being Bitten by Large Dog in Namyangju Hillside
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] On the 22nd, a woman in her 50s was fatally bitten by a large dog in a mountain area in Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi-do.
According to the police, at around 3:25 p.m. that day, a passerby found A (59) bleeding and collapsed in a mountain area in Saneung-ri, Jingeon-eup, Namyangju-si, and reported it to 119. When the paramedics arrived, A was found to be in cardiac arrest with severe bleeding from the back of her neck and was transported to the hospital but died about an hour later.
The police searched the area around the accident scene and captured a Golden Retriever mixed breed dog suspected of biting A. However, the dog's owner has not been identified. A breeding facility raising 15 dogs was found near the accident site, but the owner of the facility claimed that the captured Golden Retriever was not their dog.
The police are investigating the detailed circumstances of the accident while searching for the owner of the Golden Retriever that attacked A.
Meanwhile, as incidents of people being injured or killed by dog bites continue, public wariness and negative perceptions toward large dogs are increasing. Previously, there were incidents where a famous celebrity's pet dog attacked passersby or bit a resident on an elevator, resulting in death.
Recently, it was reported that two employees at a dog cafe in Anseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, were seriously injured by a 'Dogo Argentino.' Employee B was attacked on February 7, her third day of work, while trying to take the Dogo Argentino owned by the boss out of the kennel and put a muzzle on it. B sustained serious injuries to her legs and arms. The incident became controversial after B posted about her grievance on social media, and later the boss announced through a media outlet that the dog was euthanized.
As more people keep pets, such accidents are occurring more frequently. According to statistics from the Fire Agency, from 2016 to 2018, a total of 6,883 patients were transported to hospitals due to dog bite incidents, with over 2,000 patients each year. Considering these are only the patients transported to hospitals, the actual number of dog bite victims is estimated to be higher.

In response, the government announced in 2018 that it would strengthen regulations by amending related laws, imposing up to two years imprisonment or fines up to 20 million won for failing to comply with safety measures such as leashes and muzzles, resulting in injury to a person. In cases causing death, penalties include up to three years imprisonment or fines up to 30 million won. Since 2019, stricter penalties than those for negligent injury or manslaughter under criminal law have been established in the Animal Protection Act, requiring mandatory muzzles for five types of dangerous dogs.
