View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] As the fourth wave of COVID-19 spreads mainly in major industrial complex areas in Vietnam, a Korean infection case has been reported for the first time.
According to Vietnamese health authorities on the 21st, a Korean expatriate in Bac Giang Province in the north tested positive. The confirmed case is known to reside in Hanoi, a residential area densely populated by Koreans.
Since the fourth wave of local infections began at the end of last month, Vietnam has reported 1,786 confirmed cases across 30 cities and provinces.
More than half of these cases, 60%, came from Bac Giang and Bac Ninh Provinces, where many Korean companies are concentrated. Bac Giang recorded 683 cases, and Bac Ninh recorded 378 cases. As the spread intensified, Bac Giang has currently closed 4 out of its 6 industrial complexes.
This is the first case of local infection among Koreans in Vietnam. The infected Korean is an employee working at company H located in Bac Giang Province. After multiple local confirmed cases occurred within the company, the employee reportedly stayed at the office for a while, leaving home to help manage the situation.
Company H is known to supply parts to Korean and Japanese companies and is a partner of Samsung Electronics' mobile phone factory located in Bac Ninh Province.
Meanwhile, the Korean Embassy in Vietnam has immediately begun assessing the situation related to the confirmed case. It also advised the Korean community to refrain from going out and to wear masks.
