"Up to 700,000 KRW Official Subsidy" Galaxy S20 FE Price Drops
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] Ahead of the launch of Samsung Electronics' 'Galaxy S21 Fan Edition (FE)', the official subsidy for the Galaxy S20 FE released last year has increased up to 700,000 KRW. The actual purchase price has dropped to below 100,000 KRW at the lowest.
According to industry sources on the 21st, LG Uplus raised the official subsidy for the Galaxy S20 FE 5G from a maximum of 450,000 KRW to 700,000 KRW as of the 19th. This is the second adjustment, from the initial maximum of 227,000 KRW at launch to 450,000 KRW in November last year, and now to 700,000 KRW. This is the highest level among the three major mobile carriers. It is even higher than KT's maximum subsidy of 600,000 KRW, which was increased earlier this month.
The Galaxy S20 FE's retail price is 899,800 KRW, and if using an LG Uplus plan costing more than 100,000 KRW per month, the actual purchase price, including an additional subsidy of 105,000 KRW from the distribution network, drops to 94,800 KRW.
This increase in official subsidy is seen as a move to clear inventory ahead of the release of the next model, the Galaxy S21 FE. Following KT, LG Uplus also raised the official subsidy, and it is expected that SK Telecom will soon join this trend. SK Telecom's subsidy has been maintained at a maximum of 480,000 KRW since February.
The FE is a limited edition model introduced by Samsung Electronics for Galaxy fans. When it first appeared in 2017, it largely involved recycling parts from the discontinued Galaxy Note7, but last year's S20 FE, emphasizing cost-effectiveness, gained popularity even during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping to compensate for the Galaxy S20's poor performance.

The Galaxy S21 FE is likely to be released around August. Since Samsung decided not to unveil a new Galaxy Note at the unpack event in the second half of this year, the FE, along with the foldable lineup, is gaining support as a substitute for the Note's absence.
