First Unique Activity Experience Tourist Spot in Korea... Scheduled to Open in Second Half of the Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Donghae City, Gangwon Province, has decided on the name "Mureung Byeolyucheonji" for the limestone abandoned mine site in Samhwa-dong Mureung 3 District, which is being developed into a complex experiential tourism complex, following a citizen preference survey.
On the 20th, the city stated, "Ahead of the opening scheduled for the second half of this year, we conducted a citizen preference survey on three proposed names?'Mureung Byeolyucheonji,' 'Oron District,' and 'Giant Hill'?after initial expert and internal consultations to select a name that reflects the identity of the site."
Out of 746 total survey respondents, 342 (45.7%) chose "Mureung Byeolyucheonji," and the preference for this name was consistent across gender and age groups.
According to the city, "Mureung Byeolyucheonji" is also inscribed on the rock carvings in Mureung Valley and symbolizes a utopia separated from the mundane world, known as the place with the best scenery under the sky. It was selected as the name that best embodies the identity of the site.
Meanwhile, since December 2017, the city has been developing the limestone abandoned mine site in Samhwa-dong Mureung 3 District, where mining ended, into a complex experiential tourism complex.
With its vast emerald-colored lake, majestic limestone cliffs, and fortress-like expansive area, it is considered the first domestic case utilizing a limestone abandoned mine site, boasting exceptional natural scenery.
"Mureung Byeolyucheonji" will feature Korea’s first experiential facilities such as the "Skyder Glider," "Off-road Luge," "Alpine Coast," and "Rollercoaster-type Zipline," along with an emerald-colored lake, lavender garden, and observatory.
Currently, final construction is being accelerated with the goal of opening in the second half of this year.

Kim Hye-jung, Director of the Future Strategy Division, said, "The confirmation of the name Mureung Byeolyucheonji signifies a new beginning for the abandoned industrial facility," adding, "We will prepare without any setbacks for the opening in the second half of the year."
