LG Electronics Considers Selling Separator Plants in Cheongju and Poland to LG Chem
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] LG Electronics is considering selling its domestic and overseas battery separator factories to LG Chem.
According to industry sources on the 3rd, LG Electronics is internally reviewing a plan to transfer its secondary battery separator business, which has been ongoing since 2009, to LG Chem.
The separator is a key material in electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries that maintains battery stability and increases output between the battery's cathode and anode. Although LG Chem holds the patent technology related to separators, production has been handled by LG Electronics, which has strengths in electronic materials manufacturing.
LG Electronics has been producing separators at its factory in Cheongju, Chungbuk, domestically, and in Poland overseas, and is considering transferring the business to LG Chem, which holds separator technology, in light of business expertise and synergy effects.
Regarding this, an LG Electronics official said, "This is a matter we cannot confirm," while LG Chem stated, "We are reviewing various options to strengthen our business portfolio, but nothing has been decided."
