Approaching Intellectually Disabled Person to Extort Millions via Microtransactions... Police Book Man in His 20s
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] A man who approached an intellectually disabled person and swindled several million won through small payments on a mobile phone was arrested by the police.
The Seongdong Police Station in Seoul announced that they have booked and are investigating a man in his 20s, Mr. B, who swindled about 2.5 million won using small payments on the mobile phone of a 24-year-old intellectually disabled woman, Ms. A.
Mr. B and his girlfriend approached Ms. A through Facebook around October last year, built a relationship, and then called her to a karaoke room in Seongdong-gu. There, they borrowed Ms. A's mobile phone to purchase several KTX train tickets to Busan using small payments, then refunded the tickets to their own account.
From October to December of the same year, Ms. A was extorted for a total of 2.5 million won in this manner. Her father, who found out about it late, reported the damage to the police. It is known that Ms. A lived on a disability allowance of about 300,000 won per month.
