Students at a national university in Busan have taken action to support the democratization of Myanmar. Myanmar international students at this university also participated.
The Pukyong National University Student Council (President Jo Young-seok, 4th year, Department of Systems Management Engineering) announced a statement supporting Myanmar democratization on the morning of the 2nd at Han-eoulter, Daeyeon Campus.
President Jo Young-seok held a statement announcement event attended by Pukyong National University students and Myanmar international students, stating, “We urge an end to the indiscriminate massacre and a guarantee of democracy, peace, and safety for the people of Myanmar.”
He emphasized, “We also have a history of resistance, risking our lives against military dictatorship for democratization. Because we know that pain, we cannot turn a blind eye or overlook it.”
At Pukyong National University, 69 students from Myanmar are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs.
At the event, a representative of the Myanmar international students at Pukyong National University said, “The worsening situation in Myanmar is very concerning, and with overseas remittances blocked, the lives of Myanmar international students are becoming increasingly difficult. We are grateful for the solidarity of alumni (Pukyong National University students) who understand and support our pain.”
The Pukyong National University Student Council plans to conduct fundraising activities to support Myanmar international students following the announcement of this statement.
Kim Young-mok, Director of Student Affairs at Pukyong National University, said, “The university administration also plans to support tuition and living expenses for Myanmar students studying at the school. As students unite to share difficulties, the university will also help international students.”
