Hyundai Motor Launches Community Mobility Service 'Shuckle' in Sejong
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Hyundai Motor Company is launching a demand-responsive community mobility service called 'Shuckle' in Sejong City.
On the 1st, Hyundai Motor announced that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sejong City for 'mutual cooperation to introduce and operate a demand-responsive community mobility service.'
Shuckle is a demand-responsive mobility service where users can call a vehicle from anywhere within the service area, and a large van (modified Solati 11-seater) operates along the optimal route in real time.
Passengers set their departure and arrival locations and call a vehicle through the Shuckle application, selecting their seats. The application then dispatches the vehicle located in the most efficient position and guides the boarding and alighting points. These points are automatically generated within about a 5-minute walking distance from the departure location in most service areas, based on data accumulated internally by Shuckle.
When a new call occurs during vehicle operation, Hyundai Motor’s proprietary 'AI-based real-time optimal route generation (AI Dynamic Routing)' technology reconstructs the route in real time to allow passengers with similar routes to travel together, and dispatch is carried out accordingly.
This service has been designated as an urban demand-responsive transit (DRT) under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s smart city demonstration project, allowing existing bus stops to be used as boarding and alighting points.
Under this agreement, Hyundai Motor will be responsible for managing the AI technology embedded in the Shuckle service within Sejong City, as well as overall service policy and planning. Sejong Urban Corporation will handle crew recruitment and vehicle operation management for the Shuckle service, while the Daejeon-Sejong Research Institute will seek ways to enhance the efficiency of the existing public transportation system and create synergy between Shuckle and public transportation infrastructure.
Hyundai Motor will conduct a free pilot operation for pre-registered users in Sejong City’s 1st living zone from the 4th to the 10th of this month, and will officially launch the service from the 13th.
Hyundai Motor plans to utilize the traffic data obtained from operating the Shuckle service for future mobility demonstration projects. Previously, Hyundai Motor completed a Shuckle pilot service for three months starting in February last year in Eunpyeong New Town (Jingwan-dong, Eunpyeong-gu), Seoul, and has been operating the official service since March this year.
