The first major of the 2021 LPGA Tour season, the ANA Inspiration, held on the night of the 1st (Korean time) at Mission Hills Golf Club in Rancho Mirage, California, USA, is dominated by Korean players. So-yeon Yoo (31, Mediheal) in 2017, Jin-young Ko (26) in 2019, and Mi-rim Lee (31, NH Investment & Securities) last year all claimed the top spot. Among the five majors on the LPGA Tour, it boasts the highest prestige along with the U.S. Women's Open. Here is everything about the ANA Inspiration broken down by numbers.
▲ 1 (time) = Number of title defenses. Annika Sorenstam (Sweden) is the only player to have achieved back-to-back wins in 2001 and 2002.
▲ 3 (wins) = Most wins. Amy Alcott, Betsy King (both USA), and Sorenstam each collected three championship trophies.
▲ 6 (players) = All-time Korean champions. Starting with Ji-eun Park (42, retired) in 2004, followed by Sun-young Yoo (35) in 2012, In-bi Park (33, KB Financial Group) in 2013, among others, are known as the "Lady of the Lake."
▲ 18 (hole) = The hole that changes from this year. The "big blue wall" behind the green will be removed. A complete island green will be installed, just like in 1972 when there were no spectator stands.
▲ 269 (strokes) = Tournament record for lowest score. Dottie Pepper (USA) set this in 1999. The most under par record is also Pepper’s 19 under par.
▲ 3.1 million (dollars) = Total prize money. The winner’s prize is $465,000 (about 530 million KRW). The first tournament had a total prize of $110,000 (winner’s prize $20,050).
▲ 1983 (year) = The year it was elevated to major status. Established in 1972, it was held under the name Nabisco Dinah Shore Invitational from 1982, and from 2015, the Japanese airline ANA became the title sponsor, changing the tournament name.
