The Election Commission: "Companies must guarantee voting time for by-elections, 10 million KRW fine for violations"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] The National Election Commission announced on the 30th that if a worker works during both the early voting period (April 2-3) and the election day (April 7) of the 2021 by-elections and re-elections, they can claim the necessary time for voting from their employer.
According to Article 6-2 of the Public Official Election Act, employers must guarantee the time requested by workers to vote, and if they fail to do so without justifiable reasons, they may be fined up to 10 million KRW.
Additionally, employers must inform workers through internet homepages, newsletters, or internal bulletin boards that workers can claim the necessary time for voting from 7 days before the election day (March 31) to 3 days before the election day (April 4).
According to Article 6, Paragraph 3 of the same law, the time necessary for voting must be guaranteed for public officials, students, or people employed by others, and this time shall not be considered as leave or absence.

The National Election Commission stated that earlier this month, it guided major economic organizations such as the Federation of Korean Industries, the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business to guarantee workers' voting time.
