Democratic Party "West Sea Defense Day, Commemoration of Cheonan and Yeonpyeong Heroes" Park Young-sun and Kim Young-choon Hold 'Quiet Campaign'
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] On the occasion of West Sea Defense Day, the Democratic Party of Korea released a message of condolence, stating, "We honor the noble spirit of the West Sea defenders who fought in the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong, the Cheonan ship attack, and the Yeonpyeong Island shelling." Seoul mayoral candidate Park Young-sun and Busan mayoral candidate Kim Young-choon held quiet campaigns without playing election logo songs or performing dances as a sign of mourning.
Democratic Party lawmakers observed a moment of silence before the Central Election Countermeasures Committee meeting held at candidate Kim Young-choon's office in Busan that morning, saying, "Thanks to the dedication and sacrifice of the West Sea defenders who protected the West Sea against North Korean provocations, the citizens of Busan have been able to live each day with peace of mind." They added, "We will strive to create a Korean Peninsula without war. We deeply engrave the spirit and hearts of the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the Republic of Korea and will build a strong security state that no one can challenge."
Remarks from the party leadership followed. Acting Party Leader Kim Tae-nyeon said, "We will not forget the noble sacrifice and dedication of the heroes who protected the precious peace and daily life we cherish," also addressing recent North Korean provocations. He stated, "We express deep regret over North Korea's provocations that occurred while the Biden administration in the United States is reviewing its North Korea policy," and pointed out, "North Korea must cease military actions that escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula and engage in dialogue for peace."
Acting Leader Kim emphasized, "We hope the government will respond meticulously in consultation with related countries based on firm South Korea-U.S. cooperation," and stressed, "The Democratic Party and the government will protect the people's daily lives and peace with the world's sixth-ranked military power and a solid security posture."
Standing Election Committee Chairman Lee Nak-yeon also said, "We remember and mourn the 55 heroes who died defending the West Sea. We offer our heartfelt condolences to their families," and expressed "deep concern over North Korea's renewed provocations. We urge North Korea to refrain from provocations and the United States to expedite dialogue."
