Japan's New COVID-19 Cases Near 2,000 for Second Day... Concerns Over Resurgence
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] About three months ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Japan reported nearly 2,000 new COVID-19 cases for the second consecutive day.
According to NHK on the 25th, a total of 1,917 new COVID-19 infections were confirmed across Japan as of 6:40 PM.
Following 1,918 new cases the previous day, the number approached the 2,000 mark for two consecutive days. This is the highest number of new cases since the state of emergency was declared on the 4th of last month (2,578 cases).
As of this day, Japan's cumulative confirmed cases reached 463,727, and the total death toll increased by 27 in one day to 8,984. Since the COVID-19 state of emergency was lifted in the metropolitan area on the 22nd, new cases have been rising again. In the capital Tokyo area, 294 new infections were reported on this day.

Some are concerned about the possibility of a rapid resurgence surpassing the third wave peak in January. Kyodo News analyzed that new infections are rising again in various regions such as Osaka and Okinawa, and that concerns about a resurgence are becoming a reality less than a week after the state of emergency was fully lifted.
