Im Juntak, President of Suhyup, "Strong Response to Japan's Nuclear Wastewater Discharge"... Transition to 'Digital Suhyup'
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] Lim Joon-taek, Chairman of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives (Suhyup), stated on the 22nd regarding the Japanese government's plan to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, "If the marine discharge is forcibly carried out, we will strongly respond not only with the government and related agencies but also in cooperation with member countries of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) Fisheries Committee."
On the occasion of his 2nd anniversary in office, Chairman Lim released a written statement outlining future plans and emphasized, "As an institution representing Korea's fisheries industry, Suhyup absolutely cannot accept the marine discharge of nuclear contaminated water."
He added, "Despite difficult conditions, thanks to the combined efforts and hard work of the executives and employees, visible improvements in management performance have appeared," revealing that Suhyup's provisional net profit last year doubled to 30.1 billion KRW compared to the previous year.
According to Suhyup, last year the mutual finance business sector recorded a net profit of 17.7 billion KRW, the insurance business 6.3 billion KRW, and the economic business 4.2 billion KRW. In particular, the aquaculture and other businesses, which had a deficit of 7.3 billion KRW in 2019, improved to a net profit of 1.9 billion KRW last year. Consequently, the total net profit of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, which was 14.8 billion KRW in 2019, doubled to 30.1 billion KRW last year.
Chairman Lim also announced plans to transform into a "Digital Suhyup" suited to the non-face-to-face consumption culture in preparation for the post-COVID-19 era. To this end, Suhyup plans to introduce "live commerce," which allows real-time communication with customers and online product sales, and "T-commerce," which enables purchasing products while watching TV.
According to Suhyup, last year, through non-face-to-face distribution channels in China and the United States, online promotional events were held, achieving seafood exports worth 26 billion KRW, a growth of approximately 62.5% compared to the previous year.

Regarding the Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market, which obtained official usage approval at the end of last year, Chairman Lim said, "Since the final modernization project has been completed, we will do our best for the development of the market."
