Jang Yeon-ju, Gwangju City Council Member, Leads Bird Collision Reduction Ordinance Passed by Standing Committee
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] The "Gwangju Metropolitan City Bird Collision Reduction Ordinance," proposed by Gwangju Metropolitan City Council member Jang Yeon-ju, passed the relevant standing committee on the 22nd.
This ordinance aims to protect birds that die or get injured by colliding with facilities such as transparent glass windows or transparent soundproof walls, and it is expected to contribute to the promotion of wildlife welfare and the creation of a city that respects life.
Once the ordinance is passed, Gwangju City must conduct a status survey and prevent accidents by attaching bird collision prevention tape to public buildings and facilities, and it will also be able to support bird collision reduction projects for private buildings.
In her proposal explanation, Council member Jang Yeon-ju stated that nationwide, about 8 million birds die annually by hitting transparent walls, and if the number of animals dying due to human convenience increases, human life will also find it difficult to become healthy, explaining the purpose of the ordinance proposal.

Meanwhile, based on a bird collision status survey, the Ministry of Environment has been establishing and implementing bird transparent window reduction measures since 2019. Newly installed soundproof walls minimize the use of transparent soundproof walls and apply patterns at regular intervals that birds can recognize, making bird collision prevention measures mandatory.
