[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongnam announced on the 15th that the artist team "The Scent of a Thousand Years Blooming Through Art!" from the Hapcheon branch of the Korea Fine Arts Association was selected for the 2020 public art project (Our Neighborhood Art) organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and has completed the installation of artworks on the wall of Daeyaseong Fortress.

The public art project is a program led by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to provide jobs for artists and enhance cultural enjoyment for residents amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

To ensure smooth project progress, the county decided on the project policy to install artworks on the wall of Daeyaseong Fortress in Hapcheon-eup through the Public Art Project Promotion Team.

The Hapcheon Fine Arts Association artist team consists of a total of 37 artists. The project plan was developed through meetings of the promotion team and expert consultations to install bas-relief sculptural works on the neglected double retaining walls inside Daeyaseong, transforming the space into an artistic area, and designed to include LED lighting so that the artworks can be appreciated at night.

The background of the project is to carry out the public art project around Daeyaseong, which was the last pride and spiritual barrier of Silla, presenting Hapcheon’s bright future VISION based on the spirit of Hwarangdo.

The aim is to enhance residents’ pride by recreating Hapcheon-gun’s historical and symbolic significance as sculptural boundary markers into an artistic space.

The western retaining wall of Daeyaseong is themed "A Dream of a Thousand Years," symbolizing the spirit of scholars who never yield to injustice. It is a sculptural work depicting symbolic images inspired by the 4-gun-ja (four-character idioms) beloved by ancestors, inheriting patriotic and filial piety ideals, and reinterpreted through art.

This work strives to preserve the heroic spirit of General Juk-ui of Silla, who died valiantly in the Battle of Daeyaseong, by linking with cultural resource utilization plans inspired by beautiful nature, thereby fostering the uniqueness of local cultural content.

Meanwhile, the Hapcheon Fine Arts Association artist team said, "Despite difficulties such as the winter cold wave and prolonged COVID-19, we adhered to quarantine rules and worked with minimal personnel according to each role in the work process. After gathering residents’ opinions and through the advisory committee, we feel proud to have completed this artwork."
