[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Kim Soo-young) will provide 15.4 billion KRW in educational expense subsidies to 64 elementary, middle, and high schools and 39 kindergartens in the region to foster creative future talents and reduce educational disparities through strengthening public education.
The main support projects by category include ▲ 6 billion KRW for improving school and kindergarten educational environments and various programs (Humanities Academy, sports activities, career camps linked to the free semester system, etc.) ▲ 8.8 billion KRW for expanding free meals for all grades in elementary, middle, and high schools ▲ 600 million KRW for entrance preparation funds for new first-year middle and high school students.
To efficiently implement the educational expense subsidy projects, the district held a ‘2021 Educational Expense Subsidy Project Briefing’ in January for school principals and kindergarten directors, actively collecting opinions from school officials and reflecting them in education policies.
In particular, the district plans to spare no support for face-to-face and non-face-to-face convergent education preparing for the post-COVID-19 era, STEAM, robot coding, and AI education to nurture talents suitable for the 4th Industrial Revolution era, providing educational content costs to schools that have established future creative classrooms over the past two years.
Additionally, the district intends to focus support on creating a safe and comfortable educational environment for students.
Earlier this year, Yangcheon-gu was selected for the ‘Wooden Facility Project for Children’s Use’ organized by the Korea Forest Service and will carry out a project to remodel indoor spaces such as elementary school health rooms, where sick students can rest, using wood.
This project will select one elementary school and provide 100 million KRW (50 million KRW national funds, 50 million KRW district funds), with a pilot program planned at Mokdong Elementary School.
Mayor Kim Soo-young of Yangcheon-gu said, "Safety can never be overemphasized," and has been promoting various student safety-related projects.
Following the operation of ‘Our School Safety Watchers’ and after-school autonomous learning safety care for safe commuting of elementary, middle, and high school students, this year, for the first time, a safety education video tailored to the perspective of young children will be produced and distributed to all kindergartens in the region to aid safety awareness among kindergarteners.
In addition, a new project will be launched to match low-income students preparing for college entrance interviews with career teachers for one-on-one counseling, easing the economic burden on parents and creating an environment where students can focus on their career paths and college admissions.
