[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Due to the spread of COVID-19 and the increase in single-person households, South Korea's exports of household dishwashers reached an all-time high last year, increasing by more than 40% compared to the previous year.
According to the Korea International Trade Association's International Trade and Commerce Research Institute on the 11th, South Korea's household dishwasher export value last year was recorded at a record high of $245.78 million. This represents a 41% increase compared to the previous year. In April and May of last year, dishwasher exports suffered significant damage due to lockdown measures in major countries caused by COVID-19, recording $7.83 million (a 56.4% decrease) and $10.98 million (a 41.3% decrease) respectively compared to the same period the previous year. However, exports quickly rebounded, starting with $22.89 million in June and maintaining monthly export performance exceeding $20 million through the end of the year.
The International Trade and Commerce Research Institute analyzed, "The increase in single-person households and the spread of the 'convenience premium' trend, where convenience equates to premium, have increased demand to reduce household labor burdens," adding, "Heightened interest in hygiene and the 'homeconomy (home + economy)' due to COVID-19 is also a major factor."
Based on an evaluation by artificial intelligence (AI) that comprehensively assessed nine indicators including GDP, population, and import growth rates of 58 major countries, the market with the highest export potential for South Korean household dishwashers was the United States (83.1 points), followed by Russia (80.3 points) and Germany (78.1 points).
The United States is the largest export market for Korean household dishwashers, recording export performance of $149.8 million last year, a 34% increase compared to the previous year. Exports of dishwashers to India also increased by 274.8% compared to the previous year, marking it as a market to watch in the future.
Yang Ji-won, a researcher at the Korea International Trade Association, stated, "Korean household dishwashers are securing global competitiveness by employing various strategies such as smart home appliances, improved design, and entering niche markets," and added, "If the market is segmented by household size and product diversification is pursued along with advancements in sterilization and washing technologies, more export channels can be developed."
