Yeongam-gun Cracks Down on Hazards Around Elementary Schools
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Jeon Dong-pyeong) announced on the 10th that it will conduct safety inspections and crackdowns on hazards around elementary schools in preparation for the spring semester.
This inspection and crackdown will be jointly conducted by Yeongam-gun, Yeongam Police Station, and Yeongam Office of Education from the 8th to the 26th for 15 days, focusing on four safety-vulnerable areas: traffic safety, harmful environments, food safety, and illegal advertisements.
First, in the traffic safety sector, a "Special Crackdown Period for Child Protection Zones" will be operated to strengthen enforcement against illegal parking and stopping within child protection zones (within 300m from the main entrance), as well as traffic safety violations by vehicles during school arrival and dismissal times.
Additionally, inspections will focus on construction sites around schools and outdated traffic safety facilities, along with campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of smartphone use while walking, which has a high accident probability.
In the harmful environment sector, crackdowns will be conducted on harmful facilities within the educational environment protection zone (within 200m from the school boundary) and surrounding areas. If illegal acts targeting youth, such as the sale of harmful substances (alcohol, cigarettes, etc.) or violations of youth access and employment obligations, are detected, on-site guidance and administrative measures will follow.
In the food safety sector, inspections of food material suppliers and school cafeterias will be conducted to preemptively block the supply of substandard food materials to schools. Hygiene inspections will also be carried out on school stores and snack bars around schools to create a safe food environment for children.
In the illegal advertisement sector, inspections will focus on child protection zones and educational environment protection zones where safety management is necessary during school commute times.
Kindergartens and school surroundings are the main targets, and old signboards that pose a high risk of falling or collapse during heavy rain or strong winds are considered significant hazards to children's walking environments, so thorough crackdowns will be enforced.
In particular, illegal floating advertisements that obstruct children's passage and degrade the street environment will be collected and disposed of on-site in cooperation with town and township officials.
