Gyeongsilryeon "Only 30,000 Real Public Housing Units Supplied by Mayor Park Won-soon in 10 Years"
One Month Until Seoul Mayor By-Election... "No Possibility of Supplying Up to 700,000 Housing Units"
[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] The Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice (CCEJ) has claimed that only 27,000 long-term public housing units were supplied during the 10-year tenure of the late former Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon. This has led to criticism that the promises made by candidates from both ruling and opposition parties to build up to 700,000 public housing units ahead of the Seoul mayoral by-election in a month are unrealistic empty pledges.
On the 10th, CCEJ held a press conference stating, "Although former Mayor Park claimed to have supplied 100,000 public housing units during his 10 years in office, the actual proportion of 'genuine' public housing is only 27% (27,000 units)."
CCEJ did not recognize Happy Housing, purchased rental housing, 10-year lease-to-own, or jeonse rental housing as genuine public housing, arguing that these do not contribute to long-term residential stability for ordinary citizens. They classified purchased rental housing and Happy Housing as 'pseudo' public housing, and 10-year lease-to-own and jeonse rental housing as 'fake' public housing.
According to this standard, among the 29,000 units supplied during the 5-year tenure of former Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who took office in 2006, 23,000 units qualify as genuine public housing. CCEJ stated, "The genuine public housing proportion supplied by former Mayor Oh is 81%, whereas during former Mayor Park's tenure it was only 27%, indicating that only fake public housing increased over the past 10 years under Mayor Park."
CCEJ also argued that both former Mayor Oh and former Mayor Park failed to supply the promised amount of public housing. Former Mayor Oh pledged to supply 100,000 units in 2006, and former Mayor Park promised 80,000 units in 2011. These figures are inflated by 4 to 5 times compared to the actual supply.

With the Seoul mayoral by-election just a month away, Democratic Party candidate Park Young-sun has pledged 500,000 units, and People's Party leader Ahn Cheol-soo has promised 740,000 units of housing supply. In response, CCEJ criticized, "Although candidates from both parties are competitively making supply pledges, based on the past mayors' records, these are nothing but unrealistic empty promises."
