Goyang-si Welcomes 'Ministry of Unification's North Korea Medical Policy'... Will It Become a Hub for Inter-Korean Health and Medical Cooperation?

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Lee Jae-jun, mayor of Goyang City, has actively expressed his welcome for Lee In-young, Minister of Unification’s plan to build a 'Coexistence and Peace Korean Peninsula Life and Safety Community,' drawing attention to whether Goyang City in Gyeonggi Province, which is about to launch as a special city with a population of 1.08 million, will play a pivotal role in inter-Korean health and medical cooperation.
Following the formation of the 'Health and Medical Cooperation Working TF' in October 2019, Goyang City’s support for the Ministry of Unification’s medical policy toward North Korea is analyzed as an intention to solidify Goyang City as the optimal location to establish core medical facilities, considering its geographical and economic conditions.
On the 25th, Lee Jae-jun, mayor of Goyang City, said, "Although inter-Korean relations are at a standstill, local governments’ innovative ideas and swift response capabilities can support the central government’s North Korea policy," lending strength to the government’s North Korea policy.
He added, "Goyang City will immediately commission a research project on the 'Plan to Establish a Peace Medical Education and Research Center' to build a foundation for inter-Korean peace medical cooperation."
This aligns with the Ministry of Unification’s plan to jointly develop related industries by establishing the Inter-Korean Life Science Research Institute, Inter-Korean One Health Hospital, and Life and Health Industry Complex in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and conducting joint research.
The mayor also stated, "Goyang City not only has excellent medical infrastructure with six large general hospitals but is also an optimal location for inter-Korean health and medical cooperation as it borders North Korea and is a transportation hub adjacent to Seoul, Incheon, and Gimpo Airport," adding, "Based on the research results, we plan to establish a comprehensive promotion plan and propose the project to the central government."
The city plans to present the feasibility and vision for the construction of the 'Korean Peninsula Peace Medical Education and Research Center' in this research project, including specific implementation plans such as functions and content by facility area, construction scale, and operation methods, covering ▲advanced medical education based on simulation ▲disease treatment and research through remote communication ▲training and education development for inter-Korean medical personnel ▲management and joint response system for inter-Korean infectious diseases.
This year, the city also plans to accumulate research data and publish materials through the continuous promotion of the Peace Medical Center project and hold the 2nd 'Goyang Peace Medical Forum.'

Previously, the city formed the 'Health and Medical Cooperation Working TF' in October 2019 and has conducted health checkups for North Korean defectors, health behavior surveys, and comparative studies of inter-Korean disease terminology at the 'Peace Medical Center,' which opened in June last year.
