Seoul City to Train 'Beekeeping Experts' Producing Royal Jelly and Propolis

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Agricultural Technology Center announced on the 22nd that it will operate a beekeeping expert training program for eight months starting in March to promote beekeeping, which is emerging as a high value-added industry.
The Seoul Agricultural Technology Center has been designated as a specialized institution for training beekeeping industry professionals by the Rural Development Administration, in collaboration with the Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services and the Industrial Insect Research Institute, marking the first such designation nationwide.
Now in its third year, the beekeeping expert training program plans to recruit a total of 30 participants, including beginners and those aspiring to start a business, with applications accepted for seven days from the 26th via the website. The training and practical session fees are free of charge.
The beekeeping expert training offers opportunities to cultivate practical skills ranging from basic knowledge to specialized techniques necessary for starting a beekeeping business, including the current status of the beekeeping industry, types and characteristics of honeybees, seasonal bee management, honey harvesting practice, prevention and treatment of bee diseases and pests, propolis harvesting methods, and visits to beekeeping farms.
The training runs for a total of 25 weeks and 100 hours, including practical sessions and field visits, from the opening on March 30 to the completion ceremony on November 9. The apiary is operated on the rooftop of the Agricultural Technology Center, and trainees will manage beehives through group activities.
Applications will be accepted for seven days from the 27th to March 5 via reservation on the Agricultural Technology Center website, and supporting documents should be submitted via email to the person in charge. The results of the selection will be announced on March 15 on the center’s website.

Jo Sang-tae, director of the Seoul Agricultural Technology Center, said, “Beekeeping produces various products such as honey, royal jelly, pollen, propolis, bee venom, and beeswax, and the pollination function of honeybees is valued at 6 trillion won,” adding, “The beekeeping expert training will provide systematic education for citizens preparing for beekeeping.”
