Justice Party "Jeju is Already Saturated, Welcomes Residents' Decision Opposing the 2nd Airport"
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] The Justice Party has expressed its "welcome to the decision of Jeju residents" regarding the public opinion survey results showing strong opposition to the construction of Jeju Second Airport.
On the 19th, the Justice Party stated in a commentary, "The public opinion survey asking Jeju residents about support or opposition to the construction of Jeju Second Airport showed that the majority of residents expressed opposition," adding, "We respect and welcome the decision of Jeju residents who opposed the baseless plan to build Jeju Second Airport."
According to the 'Second Airport Support and Opposition Survey' conducted by nine media outlets affiliated with the Jeju Provincial Press Association and commissioned to two polling agencies, Korea Gallup and Embrain Public, opposition sentiment was found to be stronger than support. In response to these results, the Justice Party emphasized that the plan to build Jeju Second Airport should be officially withdrawn.
Chief Spokesperson Jeong Ho-jin said, "This public opinion survey is the result of the public deliberation process conducted by Jeju Province and the Provincial Council to end six years of controversy and conflict," and added, "Since the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Jeju Province promised to support the residents' choice and reflect it in policy decisions, they should respect the results of this survey and officially withdraw the plan to build Jeju Second Airport."
Chief Spokesperson Jeong pointed out, "Jeju is not lacking airports; Jeju is already saturated," and noted, "Over-tourism is threatening sustainable ecology and peace in Jeju through traffic congestion, waste problems, sewage treatment issues, environmental destruction, soaring real estate prices, and rising living costs."
