"Tears-filled Cheong Petition: 'Weight Dropped to 37kg... Please Clear the Unfairness of My Wife's Death Due to Misdiagnosis'"
[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] A Blue House public petition claiming that a wife died due to a misdiagnosis by a university hospital doctor has sparked controversy. The petitioner urged a thorough investigation, stating that the mistimed treatment of his wife was caused by an incorrect diagnosis at the hospital.
On the 17th, a petition titled "My 36-year-old wife died due to a misdiagnosis at a university hospital" was posted on the Blue House public petition website.
The petitioner began, "My wife died less than a year after giving birth to our first child, without even properly holding the baby."
According to the petitioner, his wife gave birth via cesarean section at a university hospital in February last year and was discharged in March. In April of the same year, she returned to the same hospital with swelling all over her body, including her face, and was diagnosed with early-stage blood cancer at that time.
The petitioner recalled, "From May 2020, my wife received the first and second rounds of chemotherapy, but there was little improvement. However, Professor A, a renowned professor at the university hospital, recommended a new anticancer drug, saying her condition was improving."
He continued, "Professor A administered two rounds of the new anticancer drug, costing 6 million won per session, and said, 'Since her condition has slightly improved, let's continue chemotherapy with this expensive drug.' She then underwent two more rounds of chemotherapy," adding, "However, my wife's condition worsened to a heartbreaking degree. Her weight dropped to 37 kg, and she was unable to walk properly."
He also stated, "The cost of four rounds of the new anticancer drug amounted to about 24 million won," and claimed, "Professor A encouraged continuing chemotherapy with the new drug, saying she was gradually improving."
The petitioner said, "From my perspective, my wife's condition kept deteriorating. Eventually, at the end of October 2020, we visited the hematology department of another hospital for consultation," and explained, "The professor at the other hospital diagnosed her not with blood cancer but with chronic active EB virus infection and cytomegalovirus."
He added, "The professors requested a meeting with me. They said my wife was in very poor condition, and due to the previous chemotherapy or other reasons, her entire immune system was compromised, so there was no treatment method available," recounting the situation at that time.
In particular, he said, "I cannot forget the professor's words to me: 'It seems like burning down the whole house while trying to catch a bedbug,'" and claimed, "My wife's body was completely damaged by chemotherapy caused by misdiagnosis, making further treatment impossible."
The petitioner lamented, "With tens of millions of won spent on my wife's and child's medical bills, our family is on the brink of collapse. I am deeply worried and resentful about how to raise our child without the mother," and added, "Professor A only repeated that it was not a misdiagnosis and said to sue if I wanted to."
