Spain Records Highest COVID-19 Death Toll in 10 Months
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Spain reported the highest number of new COVID-19 deaths since April last year.
On the 2nd (local time), the Spanish Ministry of Health announced that the number of COVID-19 deaths increased by 724 from the previous day, totaling 59,805. This is the highest figure since the nationwide lockdown was imposed last year.
The daily newspaper El Pa?s reported that in the northwestern region of Galicia and the southern region of Andalusia, 40 and 107 people respectively died from COVID-19, setting new records since the pandemic began.
In Spain, 20,000 to 30,000 new COVID-19 cases are being reported daily this year as well. As a result, in 7 out of the 17 autonomous communities, COVID-19 patients occupy more than half of the intensive care unit beds.
The central government believes that the emergence of COVID-19 variants is also contributing to the rapid spread. Accordingly, flights originating from South Africa and Brazil will be suspended for at least two weeks starting from 9 a.m. on the 3rd. Previously, since December 22 last year, the Spanish government has also banned flights from the UK, where COVID-19 variants were first detected.
