Why Did Seoul Gangseo-gu Take the Lead in Nurturing the 'Green Angels'?
Designation and Operation of 'Environmental Conservation Model Schools' for 7 Schools in Gangseo-gu... Established to Foster Proper Environmental Values in Children and Adolescents... Providing Various Educational Programs Linked with Local Environmental Organizations, Facilities, and Companies
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) is taking the lead in nurturing Green Angels.
The district operates pilot schools to help students learn and feel the importance of environmental conservation through various experiences such as environmental education and ecological experiences.
The purpose is to help young people, the future leaders, establish proper environmental values and take the lead in environmental protection through environmental education.
Participation schools are being recruited until the 29th for elementary and middle schools in the area, and seven schools will be designated and operated as ‘Environmental Conservation Pilot Schools.’
Once designated as pilot schools, the district supports program development, instructor recruitment, and project expenses so that students can receive various environmental education programs.
Mandatory programs include participation in the ‘Climate Change Response Art Contest’ and ‘Writing an Environmental Diary,’ providing opportunities to understand and take interest in environmental issues.
Optional programs include ▲Theme Classes ▲Experience Classes ▲Environmental Club Activities, which can be selected according to the school’s circumstances.
Theme Classes focus on topics such as climate change and eco-friendliness to raise awareness of the seriousness of environmental problems and encourage voluntary actions for environmental protection. Simple practices like ‘Making Our Wheat Tortillas’ and ‘Making Notebooks from Old Notebooks’ are planned to increase interest and engagement in the environment.
Experience Classes enhance intimacy with the environment and allow students to personally feel the necessity of environmental conservation through forest and wetland ecological experiences, visits to basic environmental facilities, and green companies.
Visits are planned to places such as ‘Gangseo Wetland Ecological Park,’ where wetland ecosystems can be observed, ‘Seonam Water Reclamation Center,’ a sewage treatment facility, and ‘Green Companies’ that strive for environmental preservation.
Environmental Club Activities provide in-depth exploration activities for students interested in the environment through eight sessions including box paddy field experiences and eco-friendly dietary education.
A district official said, “We hope that students can cultivate healthy values about the environment through the Environmental Conservation Pilot Schools,” and added, “We will take the lead in creating a green city by making various efforts such as spreading eco-friendly energy and practicing energy saving along with diverse education.”
Meanwhile, from 2019 to 2020, the district conducted 177 educational sessions for 3,871 people at seven local schools including Seoul Singok Elementary School.
With experience-centered learning and rich educational programs linked with local environmental organizations, facilities, and companies, the program received positive responses from students and schools.
