631 Domestic Cases · 34 Overseas Cases... South Africa-Origin Cases Confirmed for Two Consecutive Days
On the morning of the 9th, medical staff are collecting specimens at a temporary screening clinic set up in front of Seoul Station.
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] On the 10th, the newly confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) were counted at 665. This marks the third consecutive day since the 8th that the daily new cases have remained around the 600 mark, and it is the sixth consecutive day since the 5th that the number has stayed below 1,000 in the triple digits.
According to data compiled by the Central Disease Control Headquarters as of midnight on the same day, 631 cases are estimated to be domestic infections, and 34 cases are imported from overseas. Most of the new domestic infections were reported in the metropolitan area. Seoul reported 179 cases, Incheon 32, and Gyeonggi 189, accounting for about 63%. Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, and Chungnam also reported a relatively high number of cases in the 30s. Gwangju, Gangwon, Gyeongbuk, and Gyeongnam reported around 10 to 20 new cases each.
Due to a decrease in the number of tests conducted over the weekend, the number of new confirmed cases also appears to have slightly decreased. According to the health authorities, the number of suspected cases tested at screening clinics and other facilities the previous day was 33,848, which is about half compared to the mid-60,000s earlier in the week. The number of people tested at temporary screening clinics in some areas, including the metropolitan area, was 22,450, a decrease of more than 10,000. The number of new confirmed cases identified at temporary screening clinics yesterday was 88.
Although the scale of the outbreak is not showing a clear decline, the authorities see it as gradually decreasing. The authorities believe that the overall spread has calmed down due to strengthened social distancing measures rather than the decrease in testing causing the reduction in new cases, which also led to fewer tests being conducted at frontline testing sites.
Among the 34 new imported confirmed cases, 14 were identified during quarantine, and 20 were confirmed while in isolation within the community. Following the 8th, one additional foreigner who entered from the Republic of South Africa was confirmed positive. South Africa, along with the United Kingdom, is known to be a country where highly infectious variant viruses are prevalent.
The number of deaths reported the previous day was 25. The cumulative number of domestic deaths from COVID-19 has increased to 1,125. The number of critically ill patients decreased by 8 to 401. A total of 1,085 patients were released from isolation yesterday, bringing the number of patients currently in isolation to 17,130, slightly down from the day before. The cumulative number of confirmed cases in the country has risen to 68,664.
