Government: "About 10 Cases of Variant Virus from UK and South Africa Confirmed Domestically" (Update)
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] A government official mentioned that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases infected with variant viruses originating from the UK and South Africa in South Korea could exceed 10.
Yoon Tae-ho, head of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters' quarantine team, said during a regular COVID-19 briefing on the morning of the 2nd, "I understand that about 10 people, including both domestic and foreign nationals who entered from the UK and South Africa, have been confirmed with the variant virus." However, Yoon added, "Details regarding the exact number and statistics will be explained in the afternoon briefing by the Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH)."
According to the CDCH on the morning of the same day, five additional cases of variant virus infections originating from the UK and South Africa were confirmed domestically. Four were infected with the UK variant virus, and one with the South African variant virus. So far, officially, 10 cases of variant virus infections have been confirmed in South Korea: nine from the UK and one from South Africa. According to the government’s remarks, there is a possibility that this number could increase.
Among the four additional UK variant virus infection cases announced that day, three were family members of an elderly man in his 80s in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, who was confirmed positive posthumously on the 26th of last month. The other case was a person who entered from the UK and was confirmed positive during self-quarantine. The South African variant virus infection case was the first reported in South Korea; this patient was confirmed positive during quarantine after arriving from South Africa on the 26th of last month.

To respond to the spread of variant viruses domestically, the government has required all entrants from the UK and South Africa, regardless of nationality, to submit a negative PCR test certificate starting from the 1st. Additionally, from the 8th, all foreign nationals entering from other countries will also be required to submit a negative PCR test certificate. Furthermore, an additional PCR test will be conducted before releasing all overseas entrants from quarantine.
