Authorities to Announce Early Next Week Whether Three Family Members in Their 80s Confirmed Posthumously Are Infected with Variant Virus (Update)
[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jeong] The quarantine authorities plan to announce early next week the genetic analysis results of three family members of an octogenarian from Goyang who was posthumously confirmed to be infected with the UK variant virus.
On the 30th, the Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency stated in a background briefing, "We have secured specimens to verify whether the three family members of the octogenarian who was posthumously confirmed in Goyang were infected with the UK variant virus and are currently analyzing them," adding, "The results will be announced early next week."
The CDCH explained, "Regarding the Goyang family, the octogenarian who died and two family members entered the country on December 13," and "One of the cohabiting family members had entered earlier on November 8, and the genetic analysis results for the three family members, excluding the deceased who was confirmed with the variant virus earlier, have not yet been released."
They continued, "The family member who entered early on November 8 was quarantined upon entry and lived normally after being released from quarantine as there were no special issues," and "After the octogenarian family member died and was confirmed positive with the variant virus, tests were conducted on the remaining family members, who tested positive, suggesting transmission within the family."
According to the CDCH, a total of five domestic confirmed cases of infection with the UK variant virus have been identified so far.
Among the two additional variant virus infection cases confirmed on this day, one is an octogenarian male who was posthumously confirmed at the National Health Insurance Service Ilsan Hospital, and the other is a woman in her twenties who entered the country via Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), from the UK.
Regarding the woman in her twenties infected with the variant virus, the CDCH said, "She entered alone from the UK via Dubai on the 24th and was confirmed positive on the 25th," adding, "The variant virus infection was confirmed on the 29th."
