Suncheon-si Receives Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Commendation for This Year's World Geodetic System Pilot Project
Selected as an Outstanding Institution Recognized for Contributions to Global Geodetic System Transformation Work
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City (Mayor Heo Seok) was selected as an excellent institution in this year's World Geodetic System pilot project hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's institutional commendation.
Suncheon City was recognized for its contribution to the World Geodetic System conversion work by proactively promoting cadastral surveying and cadastral register organization based on World Geodetic System standard maps through the pilot operation of the World Geodetic System conversion project this year, ahead of the full implementation of the World Geodetic System coordinate system next year.
The city completed the World Geodetic System coordinate conversion for 370,000 parcels within the city, and conducted reconversion and verification to maintain the accuracy of the conversion results and existing survey results, striving to improve the quality of the World Geodetic System conversion.
The World Geodetic System conversion project involves converting cadastral registers registered with geographic locations based on the regional geodetic system to geographic locations based on the World Geodetic System. This resolves the issue where the Korean Peninsula's location, surveyed and produced based on the Tokyo Datum 100 years ago, is approximately 365 meters southeast of its actual position.
Even after the cadastral register is converted to the World Geodetic System, the boundaries registered on the cadastral (forest) map do not change, and only the position on the map shifts 365 meters southeast. The actual land location, right area, ownership, and other rights relationships remain unchanged.
