LG Mini LED TV Unveiled... Strengthening Premium Market Strategy
QNED Mini LED TV
Proprietary High Color Reproduction Technology
Over 10 Models Including 8K and 4K
To Be Unveiled at CES Next Month
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] LG Electronics has unveiled its next-generation premium LCD TV lineup, the 'LG QNED MiniLED' TV. LG Electronics plans to strengthen its global premium TV market strategy by leveraging its top-tier OLED TVs and MiniLED technology.
On the 29th, LG Electronics held a TV technology briefing and introduced a new premium LCD TV featuring proprietary high color reproduction technology. This marks the first official unveiling of the 2021 MiniLED TV by LG Electronics.
The new product is characterized by the application of the new 'Quantum NanoCell Color Technology,' which simultaneously utilizes 'NanoCell' and 'Quantum Dot (QD)' technologies. This technology upgrades the existing NanoCell technology, which applies ultra-fine particles about 1 nm (one-billionth of a meter) in size to the panel, by applying QD materials?semiconductor particles that emit light at specific frequencies when exposed to light?in the form of a single film.
Light from the backlight passes through the NanoCell and Quantum Dot materials, enabling the expression of purer colors closer to reality. For example, when the TV displays red, the Quantum NanoCell Color Technology improves the issue where surrounding color wavelengths such as yellow and orange are slightly mixed with the inherent wavelength of red, allowing the TV to express a pure red color. LG Electronics stated, "We have used all the representative high color reproduction technologies currently in use in the industry to elevate the color expression capability of LCD TVs to the highest level."
Another strength is the application of MiniLEDs in the new product's backlight, which are less than one-tenth the size of light sources used in conventional LCD TVs. Earlier this year, LG Electronics first introduced products using MiniLED technology at CES 2020, the world's largest IT and home appliance exhibition.
Reducing the size of LEDs allows more light sources to be arranged in the same area, enabling a brighter screen. The subdivision of screen driving zones also improves the contrast ratio, a known weakness of LCD TVs. The new product is equipped with approximately 30,000 MiniLEDs for the 86-inch 8K resolution model. The local dimming zones number about 2,500.
LG Electronics plans to showcase key MiniLED LCD TV products at CES 2021 next month. The company intends to actively sell around 10 models globally, including 8K and 4K resolutions, focusing on large-sized products. The new product, which significantly upgrades the drawbacks of LCD TVs that use backlights and liquid crystal display devices, is expected to broaden customer choices in the premium TV market.
LG Electronics' strategy is to operate OLED TVs as the top-tier model while strengthening its premium TV market approach through the MiniLED TV lineup, which applies the highest technology alongside LG NanoCell TVs in the premium LCD TV market.
