Hyundai and Kia Achieve Record Overseas Sales of Eco-Friendly Vehicles, Surpassing 300,000 Units
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Hyundai and Kia Motors have achieved overseas sales of 300,000 eco-friendly vehicles for the first time this year. This also represents a 26.8% increase compared to the same period last year (238,155 units).
According to the industry on the 27th, Hyundai and Kia Motors sold a total of 306,266 eco-friendly vehicles (factory sales basis) in overseas markets from January to November this year.
Among eco-friendly vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs) were the best-selling with 137,286 units. They were followed by hybrids with 118,816 units, plug-in hybrids with 49,299 units, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with 865 units sold.
In particular, electric vehicle sales nearly doubled compared to the same period last year (68,907 units). The Kona Electric (EV) sold 70,018 units, Niro EV 44,146 units, Ioniq Electric 11,488 units, and Soul EV 9,020 units.
Overseas sales of hybrid models decreased by 7.6% compared to the same period last year. The figures were 42,944 units of Niro Hybrid, 26,995 units of Ioniq Hybrid, 10,522 units of Sonata Hybrid, 4,542 units of Tucson Hybrid, and 4,025 units of Sorento Hybrid.
Sales of plug-in hybrid models are on the rise. The representative model is Kia’s Europe strategic model, the Ceed Plug-in Hybrid, launched in the second half of last year, with sales fully underway this year, reaching 19,353 units sold by last month. The Niro Plug-in Hybrid also sold 19,129 units, a 27.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

On the other hand, hydrogen fuel cell vehicle sales have been mainly domestic, with overseas sales reaching only 865 units (passenger cars basis) by November. However, sales already surpassed last year’s annual sales (793 units) in September, and with Europe announcing various strategies for transitioning to a hydrogen society this year, the spread of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is expected to expand.
