'Smart Policing' Becoming a Reality... AI Recommends Patrol Routes and Security Facility Installations
National Police Agency Builds Big Data + AI 'Platform'
Crime Risk Prediction Analysis System to Pilot Operate in January Next Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The foundation for 'Smart Policing,' which combines big data on public safety and artificial intelligence (AI) technology to establish customized policing policies and conduct proactive crime prevention activities, has been laid.
On the 27th, the National Police Agency announced that it has completed the first phase of the 'National Police Agency Big Data Platform' and will begin pilot operation of a crime risk prediction analysis system.
The National Police Agency Big Data Platform is a core project for realizing smart policing by analyzing policing data held by the police and public data such as local environments using AI. It integrates and manages policing, public, and private data necessary for police work in one place and provides AI analysis tools for utilizing big data. Through this, the police plan to apply advanced intelligent information technology to various police tasks such as public safety and traffic.
In particular, using the data and analysis functions of this platform, a crime risk prediction analysis system will be pilot-operated from January next year, which predicts crime risks and utilizes the results for patrols and improvements to security facilities. This system moves beyond the existing fragmented analysis centered on crime occurrence statistics by integrating and analyzing policing data such as crime statistics and 112 emergency calls with public data such as population, major industries, and building types. It classifies all cities, counties, and districts nationwide into six types, including urban and mixed urban-rural types, and analyzes the risk of occurrence of major crimes (robbery, theft, assault, sexual violence) and various disorderly acts reflecting local environments.
This serves as important information for on-site police officers conducting crime prevention activities. The crime risk prediction results are linked to patrol cars of police substations and precincts, and AI provides optimal patrol routes. The Crime Prevention Diagnosis Team (CPO) will use it to monitor and manage various security facilities such as closed-circuit (CC)TV in real time and to identify the best locations for installing security facilities.
The police plan to introduce this system nationwide by March next year. Additionally, they have set goals to expand AI utilization models by introducing a 'Korean-style AI Crime Prediction System' and enhancing platform performance to activate data-driven scientific police administration.
