The ‘ART Team,’ consisting of students Yoon Ji-mi, Kim Na-yeon, Kang Min-ji, Shin Chae-eun, and Lee Soo-jong from Pukyong National University, recently won the grand prize at the 2020 Busan Youth Job Hackathon Idea Competition, along with a prize of 3 million won.
The Pukyong National University students presented the idea of the ‘Yeongdo Revitalization Project with Local Residents and Young Artists Together’ at this competition hosted by Busan City, Busan Regional Employment and Labor Office, and Busan Economic Promotion Agency. The originality of their idea was also recognized.
This competition is held annually to encourage youth to proactively discover new job ideas and connect them to actual job creation.
The Pukyong National University students drew inspiration from Yeongdo-gu’s characteristic of being adjacent to the sea. They proposed installing container houses to be used not only as lodging facilities for tourists but also as classrooms for young artists’ art experience courses, which caught the judges’ attention.
They saw the use of container houses as tourist accommodations as a solution to the problem of disposing of used containers. They also argued that it could create jobs for local residents who would operate and manage the lodging facilities.
Additionally, inspired by Yeongdo’s ‘Kkangkkangi Art Village’ and ‘Mural Village,’ they suggested using container houses as art activity spaces for young artists, which could create youth jobs and attract tourists. It’s a win-win.

Student Yoon Ji-mi said, “I think the good evaluation came from leveraging Yeongdo’s unique characteristic as an urban island and combining it with art. I hope that the charm of other areas in Busan, including Haeundae, Gwangalli, and Yeongdo, becomes better known and that the local economy is revitalized.”
