According to AP and AFP on the 23rd (local time), a woman reported domestic violence to the police overnight in Saint-Just, southwest of Lyon, France. It was reported that the woman was assaulted after a dispute with her husband over child custody.
When the police arrived, the 48-year-old male suspect took the woman hostage and confronted the police. Two officers who arrived first at the scene were shot by the suspect while approaching the house to rescue the woman; one died and the other was seriously injured. Subsequently, two more officers who were dispatched to support them were also shot by the suspect and both died.
The suspect set fire to the house and fled the scene but was found dead several hours later. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed, but AP reported that "the suspect appears to have committed suicide."
The woman who had taken refuge on the roof was safely rescued with the help of the police.
