On the 15th, Chungnam Province announced that it held the 'Chungnam Seafood Products Export First 100 Million Dollar Achievement Ceremony.' The ceremony was organized to share the future vision of the local seafood product industry and to publicly declare the commitment to action.
The province tentatively estimates that the export value of local seafood products exceeded 100 million dollars as of the end of last month.
This is the first time the export value of local seafood products has surpassed 100 million dollars. Previously, Chungnam's annual export values were ▲3.634 million dollars in 2000 ▲5.875 million dollars in 2005 ▲19.007 million dollars in 2010 ▲56.692 million dollars in 2015 ▲94.523 million dollars last year, showing a steep upward trend.
In particular, this year’s record export value is significant as it was achieved despite the impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
As of the end of October, by product category, other processed seafood products such as seasoned laver accounted for 70.962 million dollars, making up 76% of the total export value and clearly leading the increase in export scale. The export value of other processed seafood products this year was confirmed to have increased 4.1 times compared to the same period last year.
The export value by country ranked as follows: ▲China 28.214 million dollars ▲United States 22.619 million dollars ▲Taiwan 5.007 million dollars ▲Philippines 3.694 million dollars ▲Japan 3.578 million dollars.
Also, the export scale by Chungnam cities and counties was largest in the order of ▲Hongseong (57.894 million dollars, 62.1%) ▲Boryeong (11.088 million dollars, 11.9%) ▲Dangjin (10.403 million dollars, 11.2%) ▲Seocheon (9.549 million dollars, 10.3%) ▲Taean (1.918 million dollars, 2.1%).
The province plans to maintain momentum by investing 200 billion won over the next six years to foster the local seafood industry and increase the annual seafood product export scale to over 300 million dollars by 2030.
Detailed projects and investment costs for fostering the seafood industry include ▲establishing quality and hygiene-oriented wholesale markets and improving facilities to establish a seafood distribution system (44.8 billion won) ▲expanding seafood product infrastructure such as creating specialized food industrial complexes for seafood handling (156.3 billion won) ▲enhancing domestic consumption and export vitality by responding to changes in consumption patterns such as developing convenient seafood foods (8.6 billion won) ▲building and operating governance to expand school meals using seasonal local seafood (1.2 billion won).
