Construction Industry Sales Increased by 1.8% Last Year Due to Growth in Civil Engineering Sector
Statistics Korea Announces '2019 Construction Industry Survey Results' on the 15th
Number of Construction Companies, Employees, and Sales All Increased Compared to Previous Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] Last year, domestic construction industry sales increased by 1.8%. Although overseas construction sales decreased, domestic construction sales grew mainly due to civil engineering construction.
According to the "2019 Construction Industry Survey Results (Corporate Performance Section)" announced by Statistics Korea on the 15th, the number of construction companies last year was 78,849, an increase of 4.5% (3,428 companies) compared to the previous year.
The number of general construction companies increased by 3.0% to 11,367, and specialized construction companies by occupation increased by 4.8% to 67,482. The number of employees was 1.71 million, up 0.7% from the previous year. Among them, employees in general construction decreased by 1.7% to 534,000, while employees in specialized construction increased by 1.8% to 1.176 million.
Construction industry sales amounted to 401.3 trillion KRW, an increase of 1.8% (7.1 trillion KRW) from the previous year. Sales of general construction companies increased by 0.4% to 245.3 trillion KRW. Sales of specialized construction companies also increased by 4.1% to 156 trillion KRW.
Domestic construction sales increased by 4.0% to 371 trillion KRW, but overseas construction sales decreased significantly by 19.0% to 30.2 trillion KRW. Sales per construction company amounted to 5.089 billion KRW. The top 100 construction companies recorded sales of 146.8 trillion KRW, an increase of 0.5% compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the share of the top 100 companies in domestic sales was 32.2%, up 0.2 percentage points from the previous year. The share of the top 100 companies in overseas sales also increased by 5.4 percentage points to 90.4% compared to the previous year.
