2020 Apple Harvest: Targeting 100 Tons Export to Taiwan
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] The 2020 crop of Andong apples from Gyeongbuk has officially begun its export journey to Taiwan.
According to Andong City on the 15th, loading for export to Taiwan started on the 4th at the Daegu Gyeongbuk Apple Agricultural Cooperative Andong Agricultural Product Processing Center (Nori, Pungsan-eup), and loading at Dongandong Agricultural Cooperative continued for 11 days.
Dongandong Agricultural Cooperative aims to export 100 tons of 2020 apples to Taiwan. The apples exported to Taiwan are mainly small and medium-sized washed apples, priced at 60,000 KRW per 15kg box, which is similar to the current market price.
Last year, Andong apples were exported to six countries including Taiwan and Hong Kong, totaling 435 tons. Despite the difficult export conditions due to COVID-19 this year, as of the end of September, Andong agricultural product exports reached 1,786 tons worth 3.97 million USD, an increase of 23% in volume and 16% in value compared to last year.
In particular, kimchi, known for its effectiveness in preventing COVID-19, surged by 44% to 407 tons compared to 283 tons the previous year. Sweet pumpkin also increased by 44% to 513 tons from 357 tons the previous year.

An Andong city official stated, "We have been making efforts to raise awareness of Andong agricultural products through steady local overseas promotional activities and tasting events," adding, "We plan to accelerate the entry of local agricultural products into overseas markets through continuous promotion and marketing activities."
